Mobile Drill Equipment.

2009 has seen the design and development of the new mobile drill that is the result of requests for a more environmentally friendly drill rig with a high degree of mobility. The unit is capable of drilling to 100 meters with BTW bit size although this has been upgraded during 2010. As shown in the two images to the right side, all drilling equipment is carried on two Kubota RTV900 four wheel drive quads. A third vehicle is used for logistics support and crew changes. These images illustrate how little effect the units which have high ground clearance and a very low ground impact have had on the surrounding vegetation.

The two images on the left show the rig during operational testing after extensive modifications of the original 2009 design. Current testing involved drilling at a test site near West Lake in Prince George. Several changes were made to the drill following the first field deployment in late 2009.
Each Kubota is equipped with a small fuel efficient diesel engine. One three cylinder unit provides power for the hydraulic system that drives the drill head assembly and the other powers all other hydraulic services. The fuel requirements are minimal. The vehicle suspensions have been reworked to carry the load of the drill mast and hydraulic systems. Because the units are four wheel drive, have a high ground clearance and have large footprint tires the ground damage is minimized and access to difficult sites is enhanced.
